Childhood cancer is a general term that encompasses a variety of malignancies that affect children and adolescents. Although childhood cancer is relatively rare compared to adult cancers, it remains the leading cause of disease-related death among children in many countries.
Immunotherapy, represented by immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), has significantly improved the clinical efficacy of treating malignant tumors. Antitumor responses mediated by immune checkpoint inhibitors depend on the infiltration of T cells capable of recognizing and killing tumor cells.
Recent advances in stem cell technology are opening new horizons for patients suffering from incurable diseases and disorders. Stem cell-based therapies, including human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) and mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), have recently emerged as a key player in regenerative medicine.
Stem cells are special human cells capable of developing into different types of cells, from muscle cells to brain cells. In some cases, they can also repair damaged tissue. Researchers believe that stem cell-based therapies may one day be used to treat serious diseases such as paralysis and Alzheimer's disease.
Previous studies have shown that cancer stem cells can regulate the inflammatory response by suppressing white blood cells and stimulating anti-inflammatory subsets in the innate and adaptive immune systems.
