Some sports injuries, especially those affecting cartilage, tendons, and ligaments, can be slow to heal due to limited blood supply or the complex nature of the injured tissues. to support tissue repair, regulate the inflammatory response, and stimulate the anatomical environment necessary for healing. Stem cells can be used in:

1. Tendon and muscle injuries (such as tendonitis of the knee and brachialis), where they are used as injections into or around the synovial membrane or in the tissue pad to reduce pain and improve athletic return. 

2. Articular cartilage injuries in the knee, hip, and shoulder, and in cases of early osteoarthritis or partial tears, where it is used as an intra-articular injection or in conjunction with procedures such as microfracture to improve repair.

3. Bone fractures and osteoarthritis (such as bone stress or slow healing), where it is used to promote osteogenesis and accelerate return to exercise.

Mesenchymal stem cells are among the most studied types of stem cells in this field, due to their ability to secrete growth factors, reduce inflammation, and support tissue repair. They can also interact with the environment surrounding the injured joint or tendon, which may help reduce fibrosis and improve scar tissue quality.

Future Directions for Stem Cell Therapy in Sports Injuries

Recent research trends point to several promising areas targeting the treatment of sports injuries and accelerating functional recovery and restoring athletic performance, the most important of which are:

1. Combining stem cell therapy with tissue engineering techniques to create more efficient tissues.

2. Designing customized treatments based on the type of injury and the patient's condition.

3. Using biomarkers to determine the optimal timing for treatment.

4. Improving the quality of recovery and reducing the likelihood of recurrent injury.

5. Conducting large, long-term clinical trials (RCTs) to standardize protocols and define appropriate patient criteria (age, stage of injury, degree of inflammation, immunity).
