Since the mid-1960s, the Soviet scientist Alexander Friedenstein has demonstrated that mouse bone marrow and other blood-forming organs contain cloned progenitor cells that can give rise in culture to fibroblasts, as well as other mesodermal cells.
He noted that these progenitor cells do not belong to the hematopoietic lineage and have the potential to give rise to bone- and cartilage-forming cells. It is now known that mesenchymal stem cells occur, from the embryonic or neonatal period to the adult tissue-forming stage, in a single location that appears to be scattered throughout most vascular tissues.
They are fibroblast-like populations also known by various terms such as "mesenchymal progenitor cells", "adult mesenchymal stem cells", "mesenchymal stromal cells", "multipotent stromal cells", "interstitial stem cells", "marrow stromal cells" or "medical signaling cells".
